Year of the Rabbit: transition to parenthood

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit in Chinese horoscope and it is said to abound with inner peace and strong sense of family. Sounds pretty good! My boyfriend Cals and I start this year with gratitude and excitement. If everything goes well, we are going to have our first baby this summer.

We were absolutely thrilled when we noticed last October that we are going to be parents. I did about 10 pregnancy tests just in case. We had been trying to conceive for six months and I had been started to be obsessed about every possible trick available that could help me to become pregnant faster. I made changes in my diet and visited acupuncturist. I even tried to consume grape juice before ovulation, since I could find some articles that said it could be of benefit. At the end of the day, I am not sure whether these actions really played a key role of becoming pregnant or whether it was pure luck.

My boyfriend and I have always known that we want children one day. We are both in our thirties and got engaged last summer. It still was not an easy decision though, to decide that we want children now. I’m living as an expat in Spain and all decisions feel bigger for that reason. On the other hand, Cals is from here and our plan is to stay in Spain. Also, it’s pretty obvious that we are becoming older and older and there is more pressure to have children before my fertility window closes. Cals and I decided to trust the universe and take our chances to create our small family.

So here we are now, experiencing all feelings of excitement, happiness and nervousness. We are slowly making a list of things that we need to buy, I’m reading Emily Oster’s book Expecting Better and trying to stay calm and hope for the best.
